And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse and the One sitting upon it was called faithful and true, and in righteousness he judges and wages war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on His head are many crowns; He has a name written on Himself which nobody knows except Himself, and He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called the Word of God. And the armies which are in heaven are following Him on white horses…And from His mouth proceeds a sharp sword, that with it He might smite the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron, and He treads the winepress of the wine of the anger of the wrath of God the Almighty. And he has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: King of kings and Lord of lords.
And I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he cried, saying to all the birds flying in midheaven: “Come, gather for the great supper of God, that you may eat the flesh of the kings…and commanders of 1,000 troops… and the flesh of horses and those sitting upon them and the flesh of all, both free men and slaves, the small and great. And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered to make war against the One sitting on the horse and against His army. And the beast was captured, and with him, the false prophet…these two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with sulphur. And the rest were killed with the sword of the One sitting upon the horse, the sword having proceeded from His mouth; and all the birds were filled with their flesh. Revelation 19: 11-21
Babylon, the end-time apostate religious system has been destroyed. Now john sees Jesus returning to earth in the role of warrior/king. He returns to destroy all rule, authority, and power (1 Corinthians 15: 24), and to gather His people for the marriage supper. His robe is dipped in blood, which probably represents the blood of His martyred saints and witnesses (Rev. 17: 6). He is coming to avenge them.
When Jesus returns, we know that He’ll literally be accompanied by angels (Matthew 24: 30, 31); heaven’s army. He will lead them with a sword proceeding from His mouth. This sword is His Word (Eph. 6: 17). By a declaration from His mouth, the righteous will be raised from the dead; the unrighteous will seek refuge from His shouts, as well as from His brightness..
As Jesus returns, He wears a name known only to Himself. Remember though, that we too will receive new names only known to God. Why? It’s because of overcoming with righteous characters (Isa. 62: 2; Rev. 2: 17). Certainly Jesus did the same as an earthling.
John also notices a title written on His robe and thigh: King of kings and Lord of lords. This probably accounts for the many crowns He wears. The title is a declaration of Jesus’ absolute authority and power over humanity. That the title is seen on His thigh relates to Genesis 24: 9 and Genesis 47: 29-31. In both of those cases, the thigh played a role in people entering into a covenant. It is the same with the title on Jesus’ thigh. It is a sign of His covenant with us, meaning that He will be our God and we His people.
