In the Bible, both Jesus and Satan are called “morning star.” Isaiah 14: 12 states, “How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who have weakened the nations”(NASB).This passage references Satan’s fall from heaven. In fact, the KJV and the NKJV go so far as to translate “morning star” as “Lucifer, son of the morning.” Yet Revelation 22: 16 says this: “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches, I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”
How is it that both are called “morning star?” It’s for the same reason that both are compared to a lion: similarity. Jesus is called the Lion of Judah (Revelation 5: 5) because of His similarity to the lion’s royal, majestic stature. Satan is likened to a lion because of his similarity to the lion’s devouring of other creatures (1 Peter 5: 8).
In the same way, but only to a certain extent, both Jesus and Satan possess a similarity to a morning star. A morning star implies that it is a star that outshines all other stars. Satan is compared to a bright morning star because, as Lucifer, he was created with power and beauty that outshone the other angels. Jesus, is called the bright morning star because, being God, He is light itself (1 John 1: 5) that outshines all that exists (John 9: 5).
