We Christians see it everywhere— people showing no fear of God, or even denying that He exists. When He’s brought to their attention, they show disdain in their body language and ridicule in their insulting words. They don’t care about Him. They wave their fists and close their minds against Him. They care only for themselves.
We look at that defiant behavior – I know I do – and say that it’s the reason for so much incivility, perversions and violence in the world. If only everyone honored the Lord and His ways, everything would be better.
With 20/20 clarity, we see that it’s unbelievers who are mocking the Lord. However, some believers are blind to the fact that they themselves are guiltier; in fact worse than those they point a finger at. That’s because, at least, the unbelievers are transparent about who they are. But professed believers oftentimes fool themselves with the front they present.
We can and do mock God too when we display godliness and profess Christ as our Lord, but don’t allow Him to change our hearts. Though it may not be consciously done, it shows a hostility and disobedience towards Him. Such heart resistance expresses contempt for all the Lord is willing to do in us.
It is important that we realize that this is what’s happening. I point it out because if not humbly acknowledged, nor repented of and forgiveness asked for, such mockery of the Lord will only strengthen and tighten the sin (Isaiah 28: 22).
We must stop being foolish. We must get real about following Christ because the Lord cannot be fooled. He knows our attitudes, thoughts, and actions. As such, it is said that He will in turn mock the mocker (Proverbs 3: 34). That applies to both unbelievers and professing believers who mock Him. Both will experience the same fate.
As it turns out though, in the end, God is not really mocked. He, of course, will have the last word. For it is stated that the finality to this present reality is that a person will reap what he or she sows (Galatians 6: 7).
