“He that dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty” (KJV). Psalm 91: 1
The thought that God has a secret place is intriguing. Wondering what and where that is, first leads me to think about what God is. Since God is spirit, the Scripture probably is referencing a spiritual place of concealment.
Another thing is that the verse speaks of one who dwells in this secret place. To dwell is to live. So then I take note that Psalm 27: 5 tells of where this secret living quarters is— “For in the day of trouble He will conceal me in His tabernacle. In the secret place of His tent He will hide me. He will lift me up on a rock” (NASB).
The verse’s tabernacle isn’t in heaven, for there are no troubled days there. The tabernacle, then, is on earth. Furthermore, it’s in many places on earth, as is stated in 1 Corinthians 3: 16’s “Do you not know that you are a temple [tabernacle/tent] of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?”
As said, I believe God’s secret place to be spiritual. What and where, then, as tabernacles of God, is the spiritual place within us? The answer has to be the human spirit that God formed within us (Zechariah 12: 1). It’s the part of us that’s witnessed to by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8: 16).
The human spirit is the spiritual cause behind the many forms of worship around the world. For Christians, though, the human spirit is where the Holy Spirit dwells and makes contact with believers’ minds. It’s a symbiosis that also allows our minds to commune with and even dwell in the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit, of course, gives us access to Jesus and the Father. Therefore, our minds dwelling in the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit dwelling in our spirit is the same as dwelling in God and Him dwelling in us.
Obviously, then, I’m proposing that the secret place of the Most High – in terms of being hidden to the unbeliever – is the self-conscious, godly-image, component of our souls: the human spirit. It is there that we can mentally live, rest, and be safe; concealed under the shadow of His protection, peace, and deliverance.
“You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.” Psalm 32: 7
