Remember Our Sins No More

As Christians, all our sins – past, present, future – have been transferred to Jesus, and remembered no more. We understand how the transference works, having been shown the working principle through the earthly sanctuary’s animal sacrificial system. But does “remembered no more” mean that an omniscient God can suffer amnesia?

It seems to me that “remembered no more” boils down to the act of forgiveness. Love forgives. It holds no grudges. It doesn’t keep score. This is one of the ways of God, and we are taught that we should follow suit. The Holy Spirit’s power can enable us to forgive, but when we do, it doesn’t necessarily mean that we forget the offense made against us. However, we can choose to not remember it by not dwelling on it. We can choose to set it aside and move on.

In the same way, I think it is that God no longer remembers our sins. All our sins are against Him, and being omniscient, He is definitely aware of them all. But in a more thorough way, He is able to and chooses to blot them out.

Does He actually forget them, as in drawing a blank? I’m guessing that He doesn’t. Instead, He chooses not to dwell on them to the extent that, for all intents and purposes, they might as well be out of His mind. He chooses to not dwell on our sins; not only for our sake, but for His sake too (Isaiah 43: 25). God hates sin. He puts sin behind us and Himself (Isaiah 38: 17). His only focus is to grow us anew in the clean-slate righteousness of Jesus.

When we sin and then confess that sin (for the benefit of self-awareness and repentance), God is faithful to forgive and cleanse us of that sin (1 John 1: 9) and then move on; knowing that the sin offering has already been made once and for all by His only begotten Son.
