Is It OK For Christians To Serve In The Military?

The Bible doesn’t specifically state whether or not it’s okay for a Christian to serve in the armed forces. However, throughout the Bible, there are illustrations of many serving the Lord who also served militarily. Not only that, but certain men ordained by God to be leaders, organized armies and initiated military actions.

For instance, in Genesis 14: 14, Abraham formed an army of 318 from his household in order to rescue his nephew Lot.

Then there’s Israel’s first permanent army developed by Saul (1 Samuel 13: 2; 24: 2; 26: 2). King David later expanded Israel’s army and even accepted foreigners who were loyal to him (2 Samuel 15: 19-22). David’s son, King Soloman, was also instrumental in enlarging and strengthening the army (1 kings 10: 26).

The New Testament mentions several men of God, military soldiers, who are described in a praiseworthy manner: Matthew 8: 5-10; Luke 7:2-5; Acts 10:1, 2.

The way I see it, the military is an essential part of the government, and earthly government is ordained by God; so says Romans 13: 1. I know that claim is a curious one because of the corruption, injustice, and brute- force tyranny exhibited by many governments around the world. That happens because sin has marred this world. Nonetheless, God’s ordained model of government, given to us to follow, is good; what with its concept of peace, order, justice, and righteousness.

As to the question of whether or not it’s suitable for a Christian to serve in the military, God, as pointed out, has condoned the formation of the military. And He knew that it would include His people. Since God does not change, that would hold true for the present.

This, however, is not to say that every Christian should serve in the military. For those, though, who feel so inclined to enter, I dare say that the Lord would honor that decision.
