I’ve often thought that if God appeared, spoke to me, and performed miracles like He did with those in the Bible, nothing could tempt me to live other than a godly life. With that kind of a witness, nothing could make me slip or fall. I would be the invincible Super Christian
I’ve also thought that would be the case with everybody else too. It would be such an impact – God making an appearance, speaking and performing miracles – I imagined we’d all be awe-stricken and happy to want to straighten up and do right.
But that’s my human reasoning; not God’s wisdom. He has a different process to help us live righteously. Apparently, He deems His recorded appearances, nature, thoughts, character, power, actions, and miracles to be sufficiently helpful. After all, as part of Scripture, that knowledge can help fulfill our need for doctrine, for reproof, for correction and instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3: 16).
Furthermore, God has set forth the Bible as completely able to make us wise to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 3: 15).
There is no need for God to over and over again manifest Himself to us, physically and audibly, as in the days of old. After all, even then, that didn’t cause a lot of people to walk the straight and narrow. Think about Adam and Eve; the Israelites in the wilderness; and other disobedient biblical characters who had the privilege of witnessing God and his miracles.
God has given us proof of His existence, not only in His Word, but in the act of creating the universe, the earth, and us.
Speaking of creating us, He’s done it twice—once in Adam and then in Jesus. That, of course, is so important—the Jesus part. Because for those of us who are in Christ; God, through the Holy Spirit, is present with us and can still perform miracles.
In God’s wisdom, enough is enough. In His wisdom, He has determined that it is now our faith, showing trust in what He’s done – creation, His preserved Word, and the Holy Spirit’s ministry – that will provide for a direct relationship with Him.
