Believing that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, and having an earnest desire for the truth, will go a long way towards gaining the truth. If that is our motive – the seeking of God’s truth – God will accommodate those who are teachable; who humbly want to understand His word.
Jesus first said that when He said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them unto babes.” Matthew 11: 25.
On the other hand, if the purpose is to research the Bible simply to argue against it, the risk is self-deception. For God will make an allowance for that too. “Because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved…God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.” 2 Thessalonians 2: 10, 11.
Have a Concordance on hand to help with the Hebrew and Greek meanings of English words. Bible commentaries that give historical context can sometimes be helpful too.
Before the study, pray for the Holy Spirit’s help. It is the Spirit Himself who inspired the words of the Bible. As the author, He is the one who can enlighten our minds to both the surface and deep meanings and intentions of scripture.
“No one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God…The Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” 1 Corinthians 2:7-14.
Compare scripture with scripture. It is dangerous to build theology on one isolated passage of scripture. Look throughout the Bible for all the verses pertaining to a topic of study. This way, the Bible will explain itself, giving the whole picture.
For the sake of truth, we must also be willing to give up established beliefs and practices that contradict and/or are without scriptural foundation.
Make studying the Bible a priority. Schedule a time for it and stick to it. The more this is adhered to, there will be a felt and shared identification with the psalmist who wrote, “As the deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for You, O God.” Psalm 42: 1.
With such a commitment, one’s love for the Bible can only be
strengthened. Drawing closer to the Lord will be the result. To that end, God promises “You will seek me and find me, when you search for me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13.
Finally, determine to live according to the light received in order to gain the most from the study. Be a doer of His word; not just a listener. In this way does God reveal additional truth.
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man…” Matthew 7: 24
“If you abide in My Word, you are my disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:31, 32.
