I’m not interested in holding hands with other faiths, as though we’re cut from the same cloth and praying to the same God. During a discussion about evangelizing, it was suggested I do that. But I’m not going to do that when I know that there is only one way; one truth; and one God.
It was also said that in order to possibly have someone of another faith understand and accept Christ, I should befriend them and get to know everything about the other person’s belief system.
I’ve got no problem with being friends with someone of another religion. But that’s not always possible; especially if you’ve just met someone and evangelizing is on the mind. However, there can be some merit in knowing, in general, something about other religions. And I do know a little about the major ones.
But I don’t rely on that. And I’m not going to exhaust myself spending an inordinate amount of time studying more about other religions. That’s because if I knew nothing about other religions, my confidence in talking Christ crucified would be the same.
In fact, I’ll go so far as saying that I don’t think it’s necessary at all to know where another person of another religion is coming from. That’s because I believe the Christian’s main purpose is to plant the seeds of the Gospel, knowing that it is the Holy Spirit who does the watering and growing.
In the pursuit of conversions, my thinking is that all we Christians really need to know is the Gospel. Now I’m fully aware that in addition to what we know about our faith, we also should know why we believe it and be able to defend it.
But in the end, stripped of all else, I believe we Christians should walk in the faith that it is the Gospel itself – eloquently or ineloquently delivered – that contains the power to convert and save.
I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes. Romans 1: 16.
