I was recently informed of a nifty way to respond to the challenge of proving that the Bible is true. It’s quick and easy. It’s a method that uses the acronym UNITY.
U-stands for unity. The books of the Bible were written over a 1,500 yr. period by 40 authors in different parts of the world. That all scripture is inspired by God is seen in the consistent themes throughout the Bible; themes of sin, faith, obedience, mercy, and judgment. The major theme, of course, is the redemption of mankind through a Savior.
N-stands for non-mythical. The Bible depicts creation in a scientific way. For example, as Isaac Newton discovered, the invisible laws of gravity show that the earth is suspended on nothing. The Bible describes God as hanging the earth on nothing (Job 26: 7).
Then there’s the lifting of continents from the seas; vegetation and animal life reproducing after its kind from fixed genetics; and the complex, organized human body designed not by chance, but obviously by a thinking designer.
Don’t forget, too, that archaeology discoveries, time and time again, are confirming the biblical narratives of then society and culture.
I-stands for intact. The Old Testament text has remained intact due to the diligence of Jewish scribes throughout the centuries. The scribes were special groups of men who kept track of and copied every letter, syllable, word and paragraph.
As for the New Testament, there aren’t any other ancient preserved works that approaches it. There are over 5,000 known Greek manuscripts and over 9,000 of the Latin Vulgate version. Then there are more than 25,000 manuscript copies of portions of the New Testament. Again, no other surviving works of antiquity come close to those numbers.
T-stands for time. In terms of prophecy, no other religious book of claimed divine inspiration contains prophetic predictions. Almost all of the Bible’s unconditional prophecies have been fulfilled.
Pick your one or two favorites as proof of the Bible’s divine authority. One of my favorites is God giving Daniel the interpretation of King Nebuchadnezzar’s metal-man, statue dream; wherein Daniel predicted the rise and fall of four nations.
Y-stands for yield. The final proof of the Bible’s truth is our testimony of how God’s Word has yielded change in our lives.
